Roma
Who knew that trying to see even a portion of all of the amazing art pieces in Rome would be so EXHAUSTING! Don’t get me wrong, I am loving every minute of it but I also loving the idea of going to bed at 6:30 every night. Personally I think Museum Hopping should be considered some type of sport cause I’m sure seeing all of these amazing art pieces and running from museum to museum ( or in the case of Rome church to church)in record time is an outstanding accomplishment. I’ve walked and exercised more in the last 2 weeks than I have in the last six months.
What do you need to know about the once center of the world? What do you want to know? Pretty sure there have been a million books written about Rome and all of the amazing history and art and they haven’t even come close to the wonder that is this amazing city. But I’ll do my best to give you the highlight reel and throw up a a couple of cool pics. I hope you like painting, sculpture and architecture cause I’m not really one for posting a lot of pictures of myself but I’m sure they’ll be one in here for kicks and giggles, but more likely to satisfy my mother.
I used to think people were exaggerating when they said it was better to be there than to just look at pictures. I was wrong. Everything from the Coliseum to the Bernini sculptures are amazing! It’s crazy to be so close that you can actually touch it and experience it instead of the grainy PowerPoint. Dr. Swensen you were right.
It’s so cool to be able to get up close as we’re being told how these pieces were made and why they are not only beautiful but amazing steps in the develop of art and technique being able to do seemingly impossible things with perspective and and marble.
But it’s more than just seeing them in real life but the experience of being there. Around the Coliseum there are people playing music in the street and there are amazing churches and ruins that your can’t se or experience in a picture. As tacky as it may sound, it’s about the journey to go and see all of these amazing things. We may or may not have gotten lost on our way there the first time but we had fun wandering around this amazing city with its beautiful building and cool little shops and restaurants that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Who knew that getting lost could be so fun?
And of course I have to brag that a dream came true for me in Rome that the little girl inside me was just too excited. For anyone that loves movies and specifically Audrey Hepburn you should know about the movie Roman Holiday. If you don’t fix that ASAP. Anyway when I was probably 4 or 5 I watched it with my mom and the scene I remember most vividly was when they went to see the Mouth of Truth. Gregory Peck’s character decides to scare Audrey Hepburn’s by sticking his hand into the Mouth of this big stone mask of Poseidon which it is said if you are untruthful your hand will be bitten off. He pulls his hand into his sleeve and acts like it’s been bitten off before popping it out to shake her hand.
4 year old me, swore she would never do that not understanding the joke but constantly being fascinated by this mask. So what did I finally pluck up the courage to do while in Rome? I put my hand in the mouth! And I still have 10 fingers. It’s amazing how traveling and seeing all these wonders of the world can fill your soul in ways you didn’t know you needed filling. If only there were more hours in the day to simultaneously see more stuff but also sleep because I am so happy and so tired all the time.
